If you want to entertain your children (or indulge in a little energetic fun yourself!) you can visit a local water theme park, try your hand at some water-sports, go snorkelling, spend the evening at a fun-fair in Athens or even go skiing in the winter.
The Local Park
There is an excellent local park a few minutes walk from the villa. Aside from the usual play equipment for children (swings, slides roundabouts, etc.), there is a bar/cafe for the grown-ups! Here you can buy snacks including souvlaki (kebabs), chips, ice cream. More importantly you can buy a cold beer and one of the strongest gin and tonics in the world! During the summer months you will also find some little street stalls selling barbacued corn-on-the-cob and popcorn.
Next to the park there are some tennis courts, a five-a-side football pitch, a basketball court and a volleyball court. The locals will often let you/your children join their basketball/volleyball games but you may be called upon to represent your country! If you wish to play tennis you should take your own rackets and balls with you. The courts work on a first-come, first serve basis. If they are locked, you can obtain a key from the cafe next door.
Splash Waterpark
The water theme park, Splash is approximately fifteen minutes drive from the villa next to the Isthmia Canal. It has a range of water slides, several pools (including one for toddlers) a restaurant, a bar and a shop. Splash will keep you and yor children entertained for the day. The Canal is also worth a visit.
Water Sports
Across the bay about a mile beyond Loutraki is the Loutraki Poseidon Resort, a Ramada Resort. For around 15-20 Euros per person you can access their facilities for the day. Here you can hire canoes, windsurfs, jet-skis, pedal boats, etc. and try your hand at water-skiing, sailing and scuba diving. For further details please visit the hotel web site here. (English version available). During the summer you can also waterski at Lake Vouliagmeni (see below)
Go to the Fun Fair
Around an hour and fifteen minutes' drive from the villa is the Allou! Fun Park in Athens. It has numerous rides, stalls cafes and bars. The park is divided into 2 areas, one for younger children and one for older kids and adults. It is reasonnably priced with a pass for the day costing around 25 Euros.
During the summer months there is usually a small fun fair down the coast in Vrahati. However, rides here tend to be rather tame and can cost up to 3 Euros each.
Picnic at Lake Vouliagmeni and Snorkel at the Lighthouse
Lake Vouliagmeni is a salt-water lake across the bay about 20 minutes past Loutraki. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The water in the lake is consideraly warmer than outside the house as the lake is enclosed with only a small channel joining it to the sea. There are several tavernas around the lake includimng one modern Beach Club offering sun longers for hire and waiter service on the beach.Having said this, we like to take picnic food and buy cold drinks there. (There is a cool-box and ice-packs provided in each apartment for our guests)
Approximately five minute's drive past the lake you will come to the lighthouse at Ancient Perahora that you can see at night from the villla. There is a natural harbour here and some ancient ruins. The water is deep and fairly cold but the snorkelling is pretty good. If you're feeling brave there are several rocks you can jump off (at your own risk) although we would strongly suggest you watch the locals carefully before attempting stunts like this yourself!
